Hello and welcome,

Being overweight and lethargic, after giving birth to my children, has always been a problem for me. I could not seem to lose the baby weight no matter how hard I tried. Seventy six pounds is not that much weight gain during pregnancy is it? They said I should be eating for two…no? Well I ate to my hearts content…three times. After all was said and done, this woman (me) was 26 years old 5’8 and 246 pounds. And that is just the start of my quest for health, love and wealth…more on that later. Today I want to write about FAT and what it really is. I hear that not all fats are bad for you, just some. So here it goes: THE FAT FACTS!

Fats are a subgroup of nutrients called lipids, which is a chemical name for a group of compounds that includes fats, oils and cholesterol. A lipid is refered as fat if it remains solid at room temperature and an oil if it is liquid at room temperature. Fats and oils come from plants and animals…but only cholesterol comes from animal products (milk, cheese, eggs).

Cholesterol is a white sticky substance that is found in every cell of our bodies. It actually is a building block for hormones, vitamin D, cell membranes and helps digest fat into energy. So what is so wrong with cholesterol? Well, it has two sides: Good Cholesterol (HDL) is a lipoprotein that travels throughout our body cleaning out our cells and vacuming up dying cells and free radicals. Bad Cholesterol (LDL) is a lipoprotein that we have a lot of in our bodies (70%). The reason that it’s bad is, that they stick to our arteries, possibly creating strokes, blockages and heart attacks. Many factors determine our cholesterol: Genetics, smoking, age, physical activity…But how much BAD cholesterol is in your system is because of excess…FAT.

We have three types of FAT: polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and SATURATED. The first two are cool, the last one is the killer. Saturated fats (lard, butter, fatty meats) those types of fats are very bad for you, all processed foods have a lot of this saturated fat shit in them to have a longer shelf life. I will tell you what asses the food industry are later on. But, in the mean time they add hydrogen to good fats and that turns good fats into bad fats called TRANS-FATTY ACIDS, which not only makes us fat, but it can kill you by raising the darn cholesterol levels. Mine was 320. Unsaturated fats like olive oil, canola oil, fish oils help to lower bad cholesterol…good stuff. So now that we know how bad fat is for us…WHY DO WE CRAVE IT SO MUCH?

We crave fat because other than the fact that it tastes good, we are biologically programmed to love it. There I said it, we love fat! It tastes great, keeps me energized and we humans have survived by storing it in our bodies. But eating fat does not make me fat, eating more than I need makes me fat. Not being active makes me fat. Oh heck, I LOOK at doughnuts and I get fat. About four years ago I went to a doctor specializing in bariatrics (Dr Brunner), she has put me on a diet/vitamin/activity plan. I am doing much better and people do ask me what I have done to lose and keep the weight off. I will share all with you, if you can do the same and share your personal quest with me. How does that sound?

Are you a woman like myself, who is happiest while doing things for others? There are women like us everywhere who seem to be multi-tasking all the time. Time has to be stretched to accommodate all that is needed to be done for family, home and at work. Life is a constant juggle of roles, including being the perfect wife, mother, career woman, daughter and friend. Of course there are a few odd balls of being a good neighbor, PTA member and community volunteer thrown in.
It can be a supreme exercise of time management and is often quite stressful. In your heart you know it is great fun. Just being needed and useful fills you with a warm glow of happiness. When you get a thank you or even a look of appreciation you float on Cloud Nine for a while! When you help a friend or neighbor by running an errand and stepping in for them, you know that just being needed by them is your greatest reward. However, sometimes it is useful to pick up a crayon and draw a pie. You could even use your laptop to create a pie graph. Make a list of all the important things in your life and cut your pie according to the time you devote to each of them. The list can include being a wife, mother, daughter, friend, career woman and member of the community. If you consider health, leisure activities, learning new skills and spiritual growth to be important then put them in too.

Are you cutting your pie into too many slices? Are you happy with the thickness of each slice? Are you missing out the most important slice – You? It can happen all too easily. You are so busy being the ‘Perfect One’ that you never have time for yourself. When was the last time you did anything which did not involve the needs of anyone else, just for the pleasure of it? You have been so busy that you have not even realized that you have put yourself last on your list of priorities. Take initiative, start now.

It often happens that people, who are willing to oblige others by doing chores for them, find themselves being taken for granted. At work, they are constantly expected to take on extra work which is actually someone else’s responsibility. Soon, work taken on willingly becomes a burden and resentment builds up within. It is much better to refuse politely before things reach this stage. Unfortunately saying ‘No’ to someone who needs a favor without offending the person is not very easy, particularly when you have always agreed to help with the same task in the past.

Learn to say ‘No’ without sounding rude. Speak with a smile and if possible offer a constructive alternative suggestion. Explain to them that you are really busy with work or that you are too tired to take on anything more. You can even offer to help out another time, if it is convenient. Even if you are not really busy but do not feel like taking on the chore there is no need to feel guilty. You are perfectly entitled to spend your time doing nothing at all, if that is what you want! No explanations are necessary.

In fact, when you take a break from your hectic schedule you can clear your mind of all its clutter and appreciate the world around. Sit back occasionally and smell the roses, particularly if you have planted the rose bushes! There is no point in taking on more work than you can handle and enjoy. Ultimately you are doing it at the expense of your own time and even health. It may be humbling, but remember that the world does carry on even without your help!

There are certain aspects of your life that you cannot cut back on, such as caring for your small children or ailing parent. Your career demands your full attention and so does your home. It is the added responsibilities that you take on that you need to consider reducing. Learn to prioritize and trim off the unnecessary demands on your time. It may seem awkward at first to say ‘No’ but remember that it is perfectly okay to do so.

This does not mean you refuse to get involved in activities that are not of immediate concern to you. It just means that you learn to say ‘No’ when it is difficult for you to do something. It means that you take on only what you can do comfortably. It means you give priority to your personal needs and give yourself an occasional treat of just being able to sit back and do nothing without feeling guilty. With all this extra time, who knows, you may even have time to shed those ten extra pounds that have been bugging you.

Start with little things. Say ‘No” to a small chore that is not urgent and you now can be managed by the other person or someone else. You do not have to give a reason for your refusal if you do not want to. Remember it is your time and if you just want to sit back and read a book or watch television it is your choice. You will soon realize that these free moments help you recharge your batteries and you are revitalized. You will look and feel better when you have pampered yourself by taking time out for the most important person in your world – you!

The complementary medicine industry is one of the fastest growing on the planet. Since the late 70s, people have become more determined to take control of their bodies. The idea that one has to be on five different medications by the time one reaches fifty is a concept that people have been revolting against for the last few decades. In addition, the many expose?s that now litter our television screens of medical aid fraud, unethical doctors and thousand of failed medical cases have driven people back to remedies their ancestors used.

When Michael Moore’s “Sicko” swept America, hundreds of people had the realization that health care companies are reaping millions at their expense. The documentary delineated many uncomfortable truths about what can occur when absolute power over your health is held by a few.

Fifty years ago, medical wonder drugs held the world spellbound. “Elimination of disease,” “Complete cures in our lifetime,” pledged the producers and their vows were trumpeted around the world. Then profit stepped in – enormous profit. Suddenly medicating the sick produced healthy revenues, and improving health made poor financial sense.

Half a century on and the golden promises have turned to naught. People are definitely living longer than yesteryear, but quality of life has taken a sharp dip. Side effects and adverse reaction have made many people wary of medical drugs. Often the side effects – soft bones, damage of the nervous system or chronic constipation – to name a few, are as bad as or worse than the original ailment the drug was prescribed for. Furthermore, the statistics of deaths or severe adverse reactions in hospitals, from drugs administered by qualified staff trained in the dispensing of that medicine, has reached tens of thousands in the US alone. Viruses and bacteria have evolved into super resistant microbes through rampant over prescription of antibiotics. The average person is asking where will it all lead to.

Nutrition is a way Forward. As a contrast, there is no documented evidence of a nutrient killing anyone and the rare adverse reaction to a vitamin or mineral is mild. Homeopaths, naturopaths, herbalists and the like, know the dangers of powerful medical drugs and their multiple side effects – not through the study of them but from interviews of men and women arriving at their practice seeking relief from their effects. Weighed down by costly medicines, miserable with drug-induced reactions, allopathic patients are searching for a way out of the tangle.

What are the benefits of shifting from a culture where powerful drugs rule our lives to the way our fore fathers solved their health problems? A healthy lifestyle increases energy levels, creates deep and restful sleep and improves digestion. All the qualities many people experience on a daily basis.

If you follow a nutritional route, you assist your body by using nutrients that provide blood and bone with building material Herbs, as grown by your great-grand parents, are a great source of health and one the body is well suited to utilize. Herbs can’t be patented for profit so no one tampers with their molecules or their price and availability. You are not restricted in how much you grow how much you put on your food or swallow in a cup a tea. If you plant fresh herbs, they continue to provide abundantly, year in and year out, even in the smallest gardens.

Trace elements, another vital piece in the health whole, are found in fresh fruit and vegetables. However, these nutrients are almost totally lacking in any food grown on chemically fertilized soils – upon which much of the world’s food is cultivated. Luckily, trace elements can be purchased from a health shop. These trace elements can easily be incorporated into your diet.
